Performance:

In the deleted items test where the deleted items folder had been emptied, it was important that content had not been thoroughly overwritten in order to be recovered.  It was especially important that the PST file had not been compacted after which item recovery is impossible.  In normal operations, however, items deleted and emptied from the deleted items folder are returned to the deleted items folder with the Outlook PST Repair tool.  Also, recovery is an all or nothing process since there is no option to select individual items to be recovered.

In cases where corruption has occurred, the repair application is often able to reassemble items from the internal checks in the PST file.  I tested a 400MB PST file which took 8 hours for Outlook PST Repair to process, recovering over 10,000 items.  It found a lot of deleted items and restored them to the deleted items folder as well as a handful of items that I was unaware were ‘corrupt’ or missing.  In the recovery, the application creates a new PST file.  The new file can then be opened in Outlook and relevant data copied to an existing data store.  Once again, please recognize your recovery processing time will vary based on the speed of your computer’s CPU and your computer’s RAM capacity.

Finally, the data recovery information cannot be viewed again within the PST file once Outlook PST Repair is closed.  That is, you cannot reopen the file in Outlook PST Repair and see the items that were recovered.  If you want a history of a PST scan, you need to save the log file associated with the PST file before closing the application.

PST stands for “Personal Storage Table”, a filename extension used by Microsoft products such as Microsoft Office Outlook. This file type stores data information such as e-mail messages, tasks and calendar items from Microsoft Exchange mailboxes. These files are stored locally on the computer itself, but can also be delivered and stored on a server. Using default settings, These Outlook mail files can be found in the following location: “C:Documents and SettingsUSER Local SettingsApplication DataMicrosoftOutlook”, with USER as your Windows login screen name. The default file name for your current active mailbox is Outlook.pst. The archive file is usually named archive.pst.

Repair Outlook PST File

If you are unable to open your Personal Folders file (.pst) you can suspect that your .pst file is corrupted. You may use the Inbox Repair tool (Scanpst.exe) to repair errors in the .pst file. The Repair Outlook PST File tool scans only the .pst, not your mailbox on the server running MS Exchange. The method determines whether the file structure is intact. If it is not intact, it resets your file structure and rebuilds the headers.

Scanpst.exe is installed itself when you install Outlook. It is located at below location:

1. Exit MS Outlook if it is running.
2. Double click on Scanpst.exe, located at C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE12.

4. To specify the scan log options, click Options, and click the desire option.
5. Click Start.
